Des « Décodeurs » du Monde au « Désintox » de Libération, de « L'œil du 20 heures » de France 2 au « Vrai du Faux » de France Info, toutes les évocations actuelles du fact-checking – en France comme ailleurs dans le monde – sont fondées sur l'observation de pratiques journalistiques relativement récentes, qui consistent à vérifier la véracité de propos tenus par des responsables politiques ou d'autres personnalités publiques. Mais il ne s'agit là que de l'avatar « moderne » du fact-checking, né outre-Atlantique avec les PolitiFact.com et FactCheck.org, pour ne citer qu'eux. En France (comme aux États-Unis d'ailleurs), les médias n'envisagent plus vraiment de mettre en œuvre le fact-checking des origines, né à la création de Time en 1923, et fondé sur la vérification exhaustive et systématique des contenus journalistiques avant parution. From the “Décodeurs” in Le Monde to “Desintox” in Libération, from “L'oeil du 20 heures”, onFrance 2 to “Vrai du Faux” on France Info, all the current evocations of fact-checking—in France or elsewhere in the world—are funded on the observation of relatively recent journalistic practices. The aim is to check the truth of what is said by political officials or other public figures. But this is only a modern avatar of what factchecking is, which was born on the other side of the Atlantic with websites like PolitiFact.com and FactCheck.org, to quote a few of them. In France as well as in the USA, medias do not plan to implement the original fact-checking anymore. Indeed, it was first born in 1923 with the creation of Time magazine and it was based on an exhaustive and systematic checking of journalistic contents before being published.
