La place des catholiques dans la crise des années 68 constitue un angle mort de l'historiographie. Toutefois, le retour récent de la question religieuse dans le débat public, allié aux controverses sur ce que l'état présent du débat politique doit à l'héritage de 68, invite à reprendre la question. L'article décrit donc le dispositif, à la fois politique, générationnel et idéologique, à travers lequel le catholicisme français a été à la fois acteur du moment 68 et, en quelque sorte, « agi » par lui. Il en tire quelques enseignements susceptibles d'éclairer la réorganisation en cours de l'espace politique, dans un cadre marqué à la fois par le déclin de l'emprise du catholicisme sur la vie quotidienne et par le maintien de son efficacité comme répertoire de sens. The place of Catholics in the crisis of the 1968 years is something of a blind spot in historiography. Nevertheless the recent comeback of the religious question in public discussion, along with the controversies on what the present state of political discussion owes to the 1968 heritage, invites us to return to this issue. The article therefore intends to set out the political, generational and ideological arrangements through which French Catholicism was at one and the same time, an actor in May ‘68 and was also ‘acted on' by it. A number of lessons can be drawn which are likely to shed light on the ongoing re-organisation of political space, in a context characterised both by the decline of the hold of Catholicism on everyday life and by the maintenance of its efficiency in the repertory of meaning.
