Erwin Rommel : le héros de la propagandeErwin Rommel est sans aucun doute le plus célèbre et plus respecté des généraux allemands de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Sa réputation d'officier de la Wehrmacht exemplaire est bien établie de nos jours. L'image que l'on retient généralement de lui est celle d'un homme intègre, d'un soldat-technicien qui inspire le respect aussi bien pour sa formidable maîtrise de l'art de la guerre que pour avoir gardé ses distances par rapport au régime nazi. En réalité, Rommel a été un partisan convaincu du Führer qui lui est resté fidèle jusqu'à la fin. Sa gloire est redevable en partie au maître de la propagande Joseph Goebbels qui en a fait un « dieu de la guerre » issu du peuple comme Hitler. Étonnamment, ses ennemis du désert, les Britanniques, ont contribué tout autant à la fabrication de cette image hagiographique en lui attribuant des qualités presque surnaturelles aussi bien pendant la guerre qu'après celle-ci. Erwin Rommel : le héros de la propagande Erwin Rommel was undoubtedly the most renowned and respected German general in the Second World War, and his reputation as the very model of a Wehrmacht officer is firmly established today. The current image is that of a man of integrity, a soldier-technician respected as much for his formidable mastery of the art of war as for the distance he kept from the Nazi regime. In point of fact, Rommel was initially a fervent supporter of the Führer, remaining faithful to the regime until the very last. His glory is due in part to the craft of the minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels, who idealized him as a « god of war » emanating, like Hitler, from the people. Oddly, it was his enemies in the desert, the British, who contributed most to the hagiographic image, attributing to him, both during the war and after it, almost supernatural powers.
