En février 2018, les graves incidents militaires qui se sont produits au sud-est de la Syrie et dans l'espace du plateau du Golan contrôlé par Israël ont renforcé le sentiment commun qu'après des décennies de rivalité contenue et indirecte l'État juif et la République islamique d'Iran s'approchaient cette fois sérieusement d'une guerre frontale. Or, en observant minutieusement la nature et les réalités de leur antagonisme depuis l'avènement du régime khomeiniste à Téhéran en 1979 d'une part, et les intérêts bien compris des deux pouvoirs au Moyen-Orient – y compris face à leurs opinions publiques respectives – d'autre part, on peut raisonnablement douter de leur volonté réelle d'entrer en conflit. Du reste, même les représentations croisées des opinions publiques israélienne et iranienne ne traduisent pas d'hostilité profonde sur des temps longs braudéliens, bien au contraire : elles perçoivent respectivement le monde arabe comme un adversaire, voire un adversaire... commun. In February 2018, the serious military incidents that occurred in the southeastern part of Syria and in the area of the Golan Heights strengthened a common perception : after decades of indirect and contained rivalry, the Jewish State and the Islamic Republic of Iran were seriously approaching a state-to-state war. Yet, painstakingly observing the nature and the reality of their antagonism, on the one hand since the advent of Khomeini's regime in Teheran in 1979, and, on the other hand regarding the best interests of the two powers in the Middle East – including confronted to their own public opinion –, their genuine will to go to war can reasonably be questioned. Besides, even mutual perceptions of public opinions, both Israeli and Iranian, do not reflect a deep-seated hostility in a « permanency of time » in Braudel's terms ; quite the contrary.
