Résumé anglais This article deals with the study of what explains the choices of consumption. The population is composed of the French young people through the case of the mobile phone. It was repeatedly noted that the French young people were lacking autonomy in the public sphere and were rather pessimistic for their future and the future of the society. Our purpose was to study their capacity to oppose to their close environment, in fact, their autonomy in the private sphere. For that purpose, we mobilized the method of Glaser and Strauss, the Grounded Theory. Three populations were chosen as they have different characteristics to observe the similarities and the differences explaining the conformity of the young people. In the end, by combining three processes (family, satisfaction, materialism), we explain the capacity of the young people to oppose their close environment, these processes being for the greater part “gendered”.
