Résumé anglais Summary. Muddy waters increase the near infrared reflectance while they raise the emissivity value, hence the radiance temperature. Field work performed in the 10,5-12,5 μm spectral range provided positive clues with respect to water pollution which emissivity is drastically reduced when chemicals, micro organisms or oily films alter the quality of water. In the Eastern Mediterranean Basin, one observes the same trend, i.e., higher radiance temperature, as viewed in the field when irrigation waters were artificially changed into muddy ones. Such a tool should be a part of every geography department, merging center of all the disciplines pertaining to the Earth Sciences.
