Résumé anglais Abstract. These two towns in the eastern part of the Netherlands, about ten miles distant from each other and situated in the same province, were divided in the past by the natural barrier of the Rhenish Plain and by the religious barrier between Catholic and Protestant areas. They have known a parallel development into now well-equipped service centres which are only connected yet by a slight functional complementarity.
