Le Parti républicain italien, fondé en 1895, joue un rôle important dans la Résistance, lors de l'occupation allemande d'une partie de la péninsule, et dans les débats institutionnels qui suivent la guerre. Mais si la République est instituée à la suite du référendum du 2 juin 1946, cela ne signifie pas une force électorale du Parti républicain qui obtient 5 députés en 1953 mais jusqu'à 29 députés en 1983. Parti charnière, il fournit une force d'appoint aux gouvernements de centre-gauche dirigés par la Démocratie chrétienne. Son secrétaire, Giovanni Spadolini, devient, en juin 1981, le premier président du Conseil non démocrate chrétien depuis décembre 1945. The Italian Republican Party, founded in 1895, played an important role in the Italian Resistance Movement during the German occupation of the peninsula, as well as the institutional debates which followed the war. However, despite the creation of the Italian Republic, following the referendum of the 2nd of June 1946, the Republican Party was not a strong electoral force, obtaining five MPs in the House of Representatives in 1953 and only reaching 29 MPs in 1983. It was a centrist party, which supported the left-of-center government led by the Christian Democratic Party. In June 1981, its secretary Giovanni Spadolini became the first Prime Minister who was not part of the Christian Democratic Party, since December 1945.
