Les différentes représentations de la femme du peuple à la fin de l'Ancien Régime reposent sur sa spécificité sexuelle (femme) et sociale (peuple). La capacité qu'elle possédait à représenter l'ensemble du peuple disparaît avec la Révolution, quand le peuple devient Peuple Souverain, formé de citoyens porteurs de droits. Et on ne trouve plus de représentation spécifique des femmes du peuple, renvoyées à un tout sans distinction sociale ; ou politique : les femmes. C'est donc après Thermidor qu'apparaît la représentation la plus accomplie de la femme du peuple révolutionnaire : la tricoteuse, monstre sanguinaire qui incarne un peuple craint et dénigré. The various representations of the woman at the end of the Old Regime are based on her sexual (woman) and social (people) specificity. The ability she used to have to represent the people as a whole disappeared with the emergence of the Revolution, when the people became the sovereign people, consisting of citizens with rights. From then on, there are no more specific representations of women of the people to be found, they were sent back to an entity without any social or political distinction: women. After Thermidor the most accomplished representation of the woman of the revolutionary people appeared: the knitter, a bloodthirsty monster who incarnates a feared and disparaged people.
