L'article cherche à montrer les parallèles et les différences entre les univers symbolistes d'Alfred Kubin et de Roland Topor. Si l'essentiel de la recherche est consacré à Kubin, c'est que Topor, qui a connu cette œuvre à partir de 1962, ne cacha pas son admiration pour l'artiste autrichien. Les liens de Topor avec Kubin passent par l'héritage partagé d'une imagerie Mitteleuropa grinçante et hallucinée, mais aussi d'une pratique de l'écriture renvoyant à L'Autre côté. Toutefois, c'est probablement l'iconographie qui offre le terrain commun le plus important, car l'artiste français y reprend l'essentiel de la thématique symboliste de son aîné autrichien – et surtout celle convoquant la femme et la mort. Cependant, là où l'image de Kubin constitue un monde imaginaire dans lequel glisse le spectateur, chez Topor, la dérision et le regard critique obligent à la distanciation. Topor and Kubin: Shared Symbolism? This article seeks to show the parallels and differences between the symbolist universes of Alfred Kubin and Roland Topor. Although most of the research is devoted to Kubin, this is because Topor—who knew of the former's work from 1962—made no attempt to conceal his admiration for the Austrian artist. Topor's ties with Kubin revolve around a shared inheritance of dark, crazed Mitteleuropa imagery, but also a practice of writing referencing L'Autre côté. However, it is probably iconography that offers the most important common ground, for here the French artist takes up the quintessentially symbolist themes of his Austrian elder—especially those invoking woman and death. Yet where Kubin's images constitute an imaginary world into which the viewer slips, in Topor, derision and the critical gaze require a degree of distantiation. Source : Éditeur (via Cairn.info) |
