The Trial of the Catonsville Nine est une adaptation théâtrale du procès des neuf activistes qui brûlèrent en mai 1968 plusieurs centaines de dossiers de conscription afin de protester contre la guerre du Vietnam. Cet article montre que la pièce répond à un enjeu particulier : tirer profit de l'importante médiatisation de l'affaire, du procès, puis du spectacle afin de légitimer l'intensification des tactiques radicales non-violentes auprès d'un grand public choqué de voir des membres du clergé transgresser l'ordre social et politique, et ainsi pérenniser un nouveau répertoire d'action. The Trial of the Catonsville Nine is the dramatization of the trial of the nine activists who burned several hundred draft files in May 1968 to protest against the Vietnam War. This article shows that the play has a distinct objective: taking advantage of the intense media coverage of the action, the trial, and the play to legitimize the intensification of radical non-violent tactics to a wider audience that was shocked to see members of the clergy transgress the social and political order, and thus promote and perpetuate a new repertoire of action.
