L'intérêt du Gramsci de la maturité pour l'Église romaine comme archétype d'institution hégémonique est bien connu. Il faut cependant insister sur la continuité de cet objet d'étude attentive, dès les années turinoises et les premiers engagements journalistiques du jeune intellectuel. Il faut aussi s'interroger sur la postérité d'un aspect de l'enquête gramscienne a priori très marginalisé dans les divers gramscismes développés depuis l'après-guerre. Peu d'œuvres manifestent cette continuité, sans doute, mais elles sont majeures. En Italie, le rapport très complexe de Pasolini au catholicisme est incompréhensible s'il n'est placé sous la grande ombre du philosophe sarde. En France, aussi curieux que cela puisse paraître, c'est du côté de Louis Althusser qu'il faut aller chercher la fidélité à un discours marxiste du culturel qui sache ne pas négliger l'ecclésial. It is well known that, in his later years, Gramsci was very interested in the Roman Church as the archetype of a hegemonic institution. This interest was not only characteristic of his old age, but can already be identified during his youth in Turin and his beginnings as a journalist. It is also worth looking into the posterity of this aspect of Gramscian thought, as it appears to have been quite marginalized in the main Gramscisms of the 20th and the 21st century. The works in which this continuity can be observed are few in number but of major importance. In Italy, the complex relationship between Pasolini and Catholicism cannot be properly understood if it is not seen under a Gramscian perspective.
