Résumé anglais For a "principial" history of Europe, Jean-Clément Martin. In response to Jean-Pierre Rioux's article on the history of Europe in our N° 50, April-June 1996, this text pleads for a specifie approach of teaching history for primary and secondary schools as opposed to university knowledge. The author puts forward that the history of Europe that should be taught has to be based on incontestable principles, such as the emergence of States of law, political liberalism, the getting along of religions and rational thought, and the mechanisms of economic and social regulation.
