Résumé anglais "Блаженство не в лучах порфира" : The History and Function of Tranquillity (spokoystvie) in Eighteenth-Century Russian Thought and Poetry From Kantemir to Sentimentalism Based on a survey of the period' s poetic repertory and a corpus of little examined philosophical texts, the article draws several interrelated conclusions about the importance of tranquility (pokoj / spokoj stvie) from Kantemir to Sentimentalism. Within the Russian philosophical and literary tradition of sensibility and sentimentalism, tranquility emerges as a fundamental component of the concept of happiness. The article examines the evolving use of the term over the period, and shows how its increasing importance derives from its place in philosophical, psychological and medical theories of sensibility that are central to literary identity, especially in poetry.
