Raymond Morrow montre comment Habermas, dans les adaptations qu'il a faites du développement de la pragmatique de Peirce en Amérique, cherche une assise interactionniste pour fonder sa théorie de la société. Habermas pense ainsi pouvoir remplacer le contexte épistémique référentiel du matérialisme néo-positiviste et celui d'une théorie (prélinguistique) de la conscience chez Adorno et Horkheimer. According to Raymond Morrow, Habermas turned to Peirce and to the development of his pragmatics in America in search for an interactionist basis to his theory of society. By so doing, Habermas believes he may thus displace, in the writings of Adorno and Horkheimer, the referential epistemological context of their neo-positivist materialism and of their prelinguistic theory of consciousness.
