Résumé anglais |
LGBTQ organisations have fought to earn marriage equality and they have used many arguments to legitimize their fight including the symbolic precedent of interracial heterosexual couples who have become legally recognized throughout the country following the Loving vs Virginia decision (1967). This article deals with the way this symbolic precedent is used. On the one hand, some LGBTQ groups have used this Supreme Court case to center the marriage debate around issues of equality, freedom and love as a way to desexualise and normify the discussion. On the other hand, some interracial heterosexual couples are aware of this symbolic precedent and support the cause, which is highly appreciated by LGBTQ organizations who showcase their involvement as another way to normify the fight.
