The characters in Brian Evenson's short story “Any Corpse” wander a decaying world: bits and pieces of corpses are rotting in an inhospitable landscape solely consisting of barren fields. As survivors of a disaster that is never explained, they set to no avail on a quest for knowledge ending in blinding scenes of violence and murder. The use of abundant details in the short story leads to profuse close-ups of a putrefying world, while provoking a linguistic and sensory proliferation that triggers a reaction from the reader.
