Cet article propose de revenir sur le Congrès général des organisations socialistes françaises (décembre 1899) où, à en croire les documents et certains commentateurs, est né « un parti socialiste ». À partir des débats, nous essaierons de comprendre pourquoi ce « parti » n'était pas viable, reposant avant tout sur une synthèse tout à la fois artificielle (pour aboutir à l'unité entre les différentes factions ou, dans le vocabulaire d'aujourd'hui, les différents « courants ») et liberticide puisqu'elle aboutit à un contrôle sur les personnes et sur la presse. The aim of this article is to take another look at the Conference of French Socialist Organisations (December 1899), in the course of which, if we believe the documentation and certain commentators, a “socialist party” came into being. Using the material of the debates, we will endeavour to understand why this “party” was not viable, based above all on a synthesis both artificial (to establish unity between the different factions, or, in the language of the day, the different “currents”) and a threat to freedom leading to control over people and the press.
