La centralisation et l'unification du haut commandement de l'armée française, avec la création de la fonction de chef d'état-major général au profit du général Joffre, marque un tournant dans l'histoire des relations politico-militaires sous la IIIe République. Désormais, les républicains, qui ont longtemps craint les penchants des officiers généraux pour un éventuel putsch, se rallient au principe d'un chef unique, contrôlant à la fois la préparation de la guerre et la conduite des opérations. Cette réforme de 1911 allait faire ses preuves puisqu'elle est restée en vigueur bien au-delà de la Grande Guerre, qui en a confirmé l'utilité. The centralization and unification of the high command of the French army, with the creation of the function of General Chief of Staff for General Joffre, marks a turning point in the history of political/military relations under the Third Republic. From that point onwards, the republicans, who had long feared that French high command had an inclination to indulge in a military putsch, rallied to the principle of a single commander-in-chief, both for preparation for war and for the conduct of operations. This reform of 1911 was to prove its worth, since it remained in force well after the First World War, which confirmed its utility.
