Lorsque débute la Grande Guerre, l'armée française est la seule à posséder une tenue de campagne inadaptée à la guerre moderne. Pourtant, son remplacement avait été étudié bien avant 1914. Mais, à la suite de débats passionnés, au sein et en dehors du ministère de la Guerre, la tradition l'emporta sur l'efficacité opérationnelle au prix des pertes des premiers mois de combat. La question de l'uniforme n'est donc en rien anodine. Elle répond d'abord à la nécessité de la performance opérationnelle. Signe distinctif de l'état militaire, miroir de la discipline, l'uniforme est aussi un symbole d'identité, d'autorité et de représentation. Producteur d'identité collective, il incarne le tragique du destin du soldat. Les initiatives de l'armée de terre relatives aux tenues s'inscrivent dans de telles réflexions. Parvenue à sa pleine maturité, celle-ci est à l'aube d'un changement de cycle d'ampleur ; ses uniformes, équilibre entre modernité, innovation, stabilité identitaire et attachement aux vertus immanentes du soldat, en seront les témoins. When the Great War started, the French army was the only army to have a battle—uniform that was unsuitable for modern war. However, its replacement had been designed well before 1914. But, after passionate debates both in and outside the War Ministry, tradition won the day over operational efficiency, at the price of the heavy losses during the first months of fighting. So, the question of uniform is by no means anodyne. It corresponds to the need for operational performance. As a distinctive sign of the military condition and a mirror of discipline, the uniform is also a symbol of identity, authority and representation. As a factor in the creation of collective identity, it embodies the tragic nature of the soldier's destiny. The initiatives of the French Army concerning uniforms are consistent with these reflections. Having reached full maturity, the French Army is at the dawn of a major cyclic change: its uniforms, balancing modernity, innovation, stability of identity and attachment to the core values of the solider, will reflect this change.
