Abstract. — Carbon products are mainly used in electrochemistry and electrometallurgy. Thus their production has logically settled in the heart of the Northern Alps. But the present sites for factories are built up whereas world demand keeps increasing. This lack of space, together with the international strategy of the Pechiney Ugine Kuhlmann association, accounts for the loss of the near monopoly situation enjoyed by this Alpine industry.
