Abstract. — The commune of Crest, small town in the Drôme valley (7 992 inhabitants) is situated at the mouth of the Diois but lies also on the edge of the plain across which flows the Rhône. This industrial centre, flourishing in the Middle Ages, reached its peak in the 18 th century. The economic history of the town is reflected in the evolution of its population : growing until the middle of the 19 th century, then stable afterwards. There is evidence of a distinct recovery after 1946 which has accelerated between 1954 and 1975. The demographic structure is biased towards the older generation, but shows a recent influx of youth. The population boom does not reflect a recovery in industrial activity : the working population fell between 1866 to 1968 despite the existence of some modern industry and a strong tertiary sector. However according to the latest census, a slight increase in the working population has been noted, even though it is still far from equalling that of yesteryear. Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |
