Résumé anglais Abstract. — The forms along which the French economic and social system has developed, together with the re-deployment of the big firms — either help or corrected by goverment intervention — are combining to lay the foundations of a new geography of the important territorial imbalances but also of another regional distribution of demographic structures and behaviours. The historical significance of such elements as the French « croissant fertile » (high-birth rate area) is becoming clearer as a matter of consequence, while the limits of the policy of regional development are being made more easily perceptible.
