Résumé anglais Abstract. — The lower part of the slopes of the Chartreuse massif in lower Grésivaudan consists of a series of fossil spreading-cones. Their major argillaceous material is typified by the Saint-lsmier clays. These sheets were formed by diffuse under-forest trickling down water, mostly during the Atlantic period. A high degree of rainfall was probably responsible. The stoppage of morphogenisis in the beginning of the Subboreal is likely connected with the relative drying-up of the climate, perhaps in connexion with early human activity.
