Résumé anglais Lake « Oisans », that once occupied the modem day site of lake « St-Laurent », has given rise to a great number of written works. Yet, many questions still remain concerning its chronology, its surface, its water level, its evolution and also its impact on the environment. Such information is vital to enable a study of the peopling of the Oisans area to be carried out. A pluridisciplinary approach (historical, geo- morphological, geological, geochronological, palynological and paleoglaciological) has brought to light new elements that have furthered our understanding of the lake beyound what had been available to us in archives. Four other lakes have previously occupied the Oisans plain and the area above « the Livet corridor » since that ice was removedfrom the valley. The first of these, known as « lac de l'Oisans », was formed as soon as the glacier of the « Romanche » began to retreat upstream the morainic hill named « Les Clots-Rioupéroux » roughly 30 000 years ago Its water level dropped from approximately 700 to 600 metres at least. This was due to the effect of erosion of the downstream barrage whilst being filled with lateral deltas and fine bottom sediments. Towards the years -10 000 the merging of the « Vaudaine-Infernet » torrential fans caused the lake to split in two. Uphill, lake « La Véna » reached the level of 740 m, whereas the « lac des Clots » below it, a residual low-level lake, rapidly disappeared altogether. This lake was almost entirely filled in sometimes around the year -3 000, and became the rather shallow « St-Laurent » lake indentical to the one that we know of historically. The violent debacle of 1219 which destroyed Grenoble was neither the first nor the worst. Others had preceeded it, from as early as 3 000 years ago that formed die thick alluvial sheet « la Véna-Séchilienne » and then cut it in terraces. Today, the possibility of such a phenomenon occuring seems ruled out due to certain developments and maintenance works. However, other catastrophes theaten the valley today, such as a landslide on the « Sechilienne » side, that is certainly an impending threat of great proportions.
