Cet article a pour objet l'analyse des conditions de possibilité de la candidature et de l'élection de Marguerite Yourcenar à l'Académie française en 1980. Cette élection fait rupture avec le principe de l'absence de cooptation de candidates que ne contredit pourtant pas le règlement de cette institution. Il s'agit de saisir dans cette contribution quels sont les usages sociaux, symboliques et politiques de la promotion d'une femme dans ce haut lieu du pouvoir symbolique. Si l'écrivaine n'est pas la première candidate, elle dispose cependant de tous les atouts nécessaires à l'entrée sous la Coupole. Or, son appartenance de sexe constitue le principal argument pour s'opposer à son élection. La campagne révèle les usages stratégiques différenciés de son appartenance de sexe au nom du progressisme de l'institution ou au contraire de sa neutralisation pour ériger en argument majeur l'attribution du genre masculin sur lequel repose en partie sa grande reconnaissance littéraire. Entre l'intérêt politique d'élire une femme et l'injonction à la neutralisation du sexe féminin au cœur de l'institution, c'est toute une économie rhétorique qui transparaît pour maintenir un mode de reproduction à dominante masculine. This article sets out to analyse the conditions leading to the possibility for the writer Marguerite Yourcenar to be candidate and elected to the Académie française in 1980. This election broke with the principle of the absence of cooptation of candidates, which does not however contradict the rules of this institution. In this contribution, the point is to grasp what are the social, symbolic and political uses of the promotion of a woman to this high rank of symbolic power. While Yourcenar was not the first woman candidate, she nevertheless held all the necessary assets to take her place under the Coupole. However her sex was the main argument used against her election. The campaign revealed the different strategic uses of her sex in the name of the progressive nature of the institution or on the contrary of its neutralization in order to erect as the major argument the attribution of the masculine gender on which in part her great literary recognition rests. Between the political interest of electing a woman and the injunction to neutralize the feminine sex within the institution, an entire rhetoric construction was deployed to maintain a mode of reproduction dominated by the masculine.
