Dans les années 1970, la théorie marxiste est le point de référence obligatoire des groupes militants politiques de gauche et d'extrême gauche et c'est dans ce contexte qu'il faut analyser les positions politiques et théoriques du féminisme. En effet, l'opposition entre le groupe des Féministes matérialistes et le groupe Psychanalyse et politique, analysée sous le seul argument universalisme versus différentialisme, masque le fait que les divisions qui s'opèrent sont corrélatives aux débats de l'époque entre marxistes. De même, les scissions qui se produisent au sein du collectif Questions féministes en 1980 doivent également se comprendre à la lumière de cet arrière-plan marxiste. In the 1970s Marxism was the obligatory reference point for the radical political groups of the left and far left, and it is in this context that the political and theoretical positions of feminism should be analysed. Analysing the opposition between the Féministes matérialistes and the Psychanalyse et politique group simply from the point of view of the universalism versus difference debate hides the fact that the divisions which existed are correlated to the debates at the time between Marxists. In the same way the divisions that occurred within the collective of Questions féministes in 1980 should also be understood against this Marxist background.
