Dans la littérature yiddish du xxe siècle, l'écrivain Rachel (Rokhl) Korn (1898-1982), occupe une place singulière. En retraçant le tournant qui caractérise son œuvre après son émigration à Montréal, la présence abondante d'arbres vigoureux faisant place à celle d'arbres blessés, jusqu'à la page blanche, cet article explore la façon dont Korn se réapproprie l'univers de la montagne, de manière à ancrer son écriture dans des territoires imaginaires où se côtoient diverses temporalités. En dégageant la modernité urbaine « visionnaire » qui émane de ses textes, cet article révèle que le lien intime avec les arbres et la montagne, tout en évoquant un Yiddishland disparu, fait de Korn une pionnière du nature writing plusieurs décennies avant la popularisation de ce genre littéraire aux États-Unis. Rachel (Rokhl) Korn (1898-1982) occupies a singular position in contemporary Yiddish literature. Focusing on the turning point that characterizes her work after her emigration to Montreal, the rich presence of abundant trees making way for that of wounded trees - up to the white page, this article examines the way Korn reappropriates the mountain as a “Thirdspace” (Soja), while developing imaginary territories where diverse temporalities merge. Discussing the “visionary” urban modernity that emanates from her texts, this article demonstrates that this intimate relation with trees and the mountain evokes the vanished world of Yiddishland and reveals Korn as a pioneer of nature writing, many decades before this literary genre would be popularized in the United States.
