Au tournant du Ve et du IVe siècle av. J.C., Athènes se dote d'un dépôt centralisant
les documents produits par l'administration de la cité. Installées dans le sanctuaire
de la Mère des dieux, le Metrôon, ces archives participent à l'aménagement de
l'Agora. Elles contribuent à faire de cette place le cœur de la cité démocratique.
Certaines approches, focalisées sur les pratiques documentaires des Athéniens, ont
pu minimiser l'importance de cette fondation. C'est faire trop peu de cas de la
portée symbolique d'un dépôt d'archives. En replaçant ce dépôt dans son contexte
historique mais aussi urbain, on reviendra sur les valeurs démocratiques que
représente cet édifice, en particulier après les coups d'État tyranniques des

At the turn of the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, Athens established a central repository
for documents produced by the city administration. Installed in the sanctuary of
the Mother of the Gods, the Metroon, this archive played a role in the development
of the Agora. It helped make this square the heart of the democratic city. Certain
scholarly approaches have focused on the documentary practices of the Athenians,
thereby possibly minimising the importance of this foundation and paying too
little attention to the symbolic significance of an archive repository. By viewing
this repository in its historical and also urban context, we will take a fresh look at
the democratic values represented by this building, especially after the tyrannical
