Cet article explore la manière dont les débuts de la Réforme protestante ont affecté les stratégies commerciales et économiques des compagnies marchandes d'Allemagne du Sud, et avant tout celles qui rendaient des services commerciaux et financiers à l'Église catholique. Mise à part la compagnie des Fugger, dont les activités ont été étudiées en détail par Aloys Schulte et Götz von Pölnitz, cette approche s'applique particulièrement à la Compagnie des Welser d'Augsbourg, qui commerçait sur une base régulière avec la Curie et des membres du clergé. Fondé sur l'exploitation de sources nouvellement mises au jour, cet article déploie une perspective comparatiste pour analyser les changements des pratiques commerciales et financières des deux grandes compagnies d'Allemagne du Sud à l'ère de la Réforme, dans leurs relations avec l'Église. The essay examines how the coming of the Protestant Reformation affected the business strategies and economic practices of south German merchant companies – especially those firms that rendered important commercial and financial services to the Roman Church. Apart from the Fugger Company, whose activities in Rome have been studied in detail by Aloys Schulte and Götz von Pölnitz, this theme is especially relevant for the Welser Company of Augsburg, which regularly handled business transactions with the curia as well as with individual clergymen. Based on newly discovered sources, the article develops a comparative perspective on the changing commercial and financial practices of the pre-eminent south German mercantile companies of the Reformation era regarding their relations with the church.
