Cet article propose un bilan des travaux qui, en France, utilisèrent l 'observation participante et des circonstances qui conduisirent une petite minorité de sociologues à s 'embaucher en usine pour étudier le travail quotidien et les relations dans les ateliers. L'auteur cherche à trouver des explications à la disparition de ce type de recherches au début des années 1970 tant dans le caractère éprouvant des conditions de réalisation de l'observation participante, dans les problèmes posés par l'interprétation des données recueillies, dans la position particulière des chercheurs qui ont, à un moment de leur carrière, choisi ce mode de travail que dans l'évolution institutionnelle et professionnelle de la sociologie du travail industriel et les orientations que lui donna G. At the start of participant observation : the first sociologists in factories
French research based on participant observation is assessed as well as the circumstances that led a few sociologists to be hired in factories in order to study everyday work and relations at the shop level. Why did this type of research vanish in the early 1970s ? Because of both the tiring conditions for carrying out participation observation and the problems raised when interpreting the thus gathered data -because of both the particular position of sociologists who, at a point in their careers, chose this type of work and the professional and the institutional evolution of the sociology of industrial relations, as well as the orientation that G.
