Comment la cohabitation entre détenus et surveillants est-elle possible ? L'observation attentive de ce face à face incontournable, jointe à trois cents interviews dans sept établissements pénitentiaires montrent qu 'à côté des relations de contrainte et de négociation existe un troisième mode d'échange que l'auteur propose d'analyser en termes de don, contre-don. Le cycle du donner-accepter-rendre est discuté à l'aide des apports croisés de l'anthropologie, de l'interactionnisme et de la philosophie politique ; c'est dans cette dépendance mutuelle que se cristallisent les principales contradictions du travail de surveillant. Force, bargaining and gift-giving in prison
How do inmates and guards manage to get along together ? The attentive observation of these inescapable face-to-face contacts, along with 300 interviews carried out in seven French penitentiaries, bring to light another type of interaction besides relations based on force and bargaining. This third type of exchange is analyzed in terms of reciprocal gift-giving. Gifts of speech (news, jokes...), toleration for slight breaches, and discreet gestures fit into a special context where clashes and riots are an ever-present threat. This type of interaction can be interpreted in many ways : moral norms, a social contract, a means of pacification and stabilization, the risks of corruption and blackmail... The cycle of giving-accepting-returning a gift is seen in the comparative light of anthropology, interactionism and political philosophy.
