Ce texte présente une description du contexte, des idées et des objectifs qui ont conduit à la constitution et au fonctionnement de la Commission Gulbenkian sur la restructuration des sciences sociales, présidée par Immanuel Wallerstein. Il décrit la manière dont ce dernier a œuvré pour arriver à un rapport final, qui a été publié en anglais en 1996 et immédiatement suivi par des traductions publiées dans 24 langues différentes. Le rapport s'intitulait Open the Social Sciences et son impact fut énorme. La plupart des discussions qu'il a suscitées ont été très ouvertes, dans l'esprit dans lequel la Commission Gulbenkian souhaitait qu'elles se poursuivent. A description of the context, ideas and objectives that led to the constitution and functioning of the Gulbenkian Commission for the Restructuring of the Social Sciences, chaired by Immanuel Wallerstein, is made. The way Wallerstein conceived to arrive at a final report, which was published in English in 1996 and immediately followed by translations published in 24 different languages, is also mentioned. The report was entitled Open the Social Sciences and its impact was huge. Most of the discussions it stimulated were very much open, in the spirit the Gulbenkian Commission wished they would proceed.
