Le récit de vie est présenté comme un dispositif de consultation psychologique particulièrement adapté à la problématique existentielle de l'individu social contemporain. Le terme d'individu social est repris des travaux de Michel Legrand et de Cornelius Castoriadis et fait référence à la dimension de l'être humain qui se constitue dans et par la rencontre avec l'institution sociale. En partant des observations des sociologues, l'individu social contemporain est défini dans l'article comme un individu en manque de repères identitaires collectifs. The life-story is presented here as a method of psychological consultation which is particularly adapted to the existential problematic of the contemporary social individual. The term ‘social individual' is taken from the work of Michel Legrand and Cornelius Castoriadis and refers to the dimension of the human being that comes about in and through encounter with the social institutions. Taking the observations of sociologists as a starting-point, the contemporary social individual is defined as one who is in lack of the collective social landmarks which provide identity. The life-story is put forward as a relational method which allows for the development of a sense of self and can help individuals to construct their identity and a meaning to their lives.
