C'est à Disidentification : Queers of Color and the Performance of Politics de José Esteban Muñoz que l'on doit la diffusion du concept de désidentification. L'historien de l'art l'utilise pour désigner ces artistes queers noir·es et latinx qui ont développé des techniques pour ne pas répondre à l'injonction institutionnelle à produire un art « ethnique » ou estampillé « queer ». Dans cet extrait, le minimalisme de Felix González-Torres permet d'aborder la désidentité sous la forme d'œuvres qui déjouent les interpellations stigmatisantes du multiculturalisme tout en s'adressant au contre-public des allié·es. It is through art historian José Esteban Muñoz's Disidentification : Queers of Color and the Performance of Politics that the concept of disidentity started to circulate. He used it to designate those queer artists of color who developed techniques to not respond to the institutional injonction to produce an “ethnic” art or an art that could be labeled as “queer”. In this extract, Felix González-Torres's minimalism introduces to a form of disidentification in which the artist, while avoiding the racializing and othering stigmas of a multicultarist approach, still manages to reach out to a counter-public of allies.
