Après une première série de travaux initiés par l'école historique républicaine dans les années 1890-1920 (Aulard, Mathiez, Dommanget), la déchristianisation de l'an II attire de nouveau l'attention des chercheurs au sortir de la seconde guerre mondiale, en écho aux interrogations de Gabriel Le Bras sur les origines historiques de la déchristianisation contemporaine. À l'initiative de Marcel Reinhard, Michel Vovelle entame en 1963 une enquête sur l'abdication des prêtres en Provence, qu'il élargit progressivement, sur le plan spatial et thématique, jusqu'à la parution en 1988 d'une synthèse de référence, La Révolution contre l'Église. Le principal résultat de cette enquête au long cours est la constitution d'un corpus statistique et cartographique organisé autour de phénomènes « tests », corpus dont l'usage reste aujourd'hui encore incontournable. After a first series of works initiated by the republican school of history from the 1890s to the1920s (Aulard, Mathiez, Dommanget), the dechristianization of the Year Two attracted the attention of researchers once again after the Second World War, echoing Gabriel Le Bras' questions about the historical origins of contemporary dechristianization. In 1963, at the initiative of Marcel Reinhard, Michel Vovelle began an investigation into the abdication of priests in Provence, which he gradually expanded, both spatially and thematically, culminating with the publication in 1988 of a general synthesis, La Révolution contre l'Église. The main result of this long-term study is the constitution of a statistical and cartographic corpus organized around « test » phenomena, a corpus whose use remains essential even today.
