Le lieu de l'atelier sera le lieu d'une conjoncture, celle où se trouve l'homme à l'œuvre et plus spécifiquement celle où se trouve l'homme en relation à la matière qu'il travaille. Nous écrivons « matière » et c'est le champ des procédures matérielles où l'artiste opère, travaillant tantôt ses matériaux, ses apprêts, tantôt ses supports ; tantôt usant de ses outils, de ses dispositifs, jusqu'à son corps même. Le faire nous intéressera donc en tant qu'il implique l'épaisseur concrète de l'art, sa matérialité. Une matérialité qui tient lieu de médium où s'inscrit l'entre-deux d'une « empoignade artisanale », celle de l'homme en devenir avec l'œuvre en train. Cet article interroge les imaginaires de la matière ouvrée en tant qu'ils sont les voies par lesquelles se saisirait l'expérience matérielle du faire. Si les imaginaires de l'atelier naissent du contact de l'homme avec la dimension concrète de la création, ils participent aussi d'une pensée spécifique à la main œuvrante. The workshop represents a particular setting where the artist and the craftsman are creating and specifically where they are interconnected with the matter. We herein consider “matter” as the field of the material process in which the craftsman and the artist are evolving, moulding their materials, with their dressings, their tools and devices, and even with their body. Our subject deals with the art in its tangible scope and materiality. This materiality represents the field of a “handmade tussle”, a field in which the artist is becoming mature all together with his works. This essay questions the imaginary of the worked material insofar as it is the ways by which the material experience of realizing could be thought. If the imaginary of the workshop is born from the contact of the craftsman with the concrete dimension of creation, it also participates in a particular thought specific to the working hand.
