Cet article montre comment l'intérêt des artistes modernes pour Giotto a contribué à sa réévaluation dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Il développe également l'idée selon laquelle le discours théorique se nourrit de la pratique artistique contemporaine, ainsi la raison pour laquelle l'histoire de l'art s'intéresse à Giotto est-elle due au fait que des artistes pionniers, comme les préraphaélites en Angleterre, ont ouvert une nouvelle perspective sur la compréhension de son œuvre. Cette étude s'intéresse donc aux différentes manières d'accéder à l'œuvre de Giotto, à travers les voyages, la photographie et les musées, ainsi qu'à la manière dont plusieurs grands artistes – comme Ingres, Puvis de Chavannes, Edgar Degas, Van Gogh, Ferdinand Hodler, Maurice Denis, Carlo Carrà et Mark Rothko – se sont intéressés à son art et l'ont compris avec le matériel théorique à leur disposition. The present article reveals how the interest of modern artists in Giotto has contributed to his reevaluation in the second half of the 19th century. It also brings up the argument, that the theoretical discourse is nourished by contemporary artistic practice and that the reason why art history is interested in Giotto is due to the fact that artist pioneers, like the Pre-Raphaelites in England, have opened a new perspective on the understanding of this oeuvre. The present article is therefore interested in the different ways of accessing the work of Giotto, by means of travelling, photography and museums as well as the way how several major artistes—such as Ingres, Puvis de Chavannes, Edgar Degas, Van Gogh, Ferdinand Hodler, Maurice Denis, Carlo Carrà and Mark Rothko—took an interest in his art and comprised it with the theoretical material being at their disposal.
