Cet article traite de la piraterie à la fin du 19e siècle dans le territoire indochinois du Tonkin vue par l'autorité militaire française. Il envisage d'abord les limites de l'utilisation de sources provenant d'un agent impérialiste pour une étude approfondie de la piraterie, puis réfléchit à l'évolution et à la persistance du brigandage avant et après l'arrivée des Français. Il analyse ensuite la composition, les activités et les modes d'action des groupes de pirates, avant d'évaluer le rôle de la confrontation et de la négociation dans la disparition de cette forme d'opposition au régime français. This article examines piracy in the Tonkin region of Indochina in the late 19th century, as seen through the eyes of the French military. It first considers the limitations of using the sources provided by an imperial agent in an in-depth study of privacy, and then looks at the transformations and continuities that existed in the world of banditry before and after the arrival of the French. It then focuses on the composition of pirate groups, as well as their activities and modes of action.
