À intervalles réguliers, la police nationale fait face, en France, à des accusations lourdes de racisme. Nous soumettons ici l'hypothèse formulée par l'historien Emmanuel Blanchard de « colonialité » aux connaissances tirées de l'histoire contemporaine de l'institution policière et des mutations de la société française, d'un côté, et à des observations recueillies sur le terrain, de l'autre. La question qui s'impose alors, et à laquelle l'article tente de répondre, consiste à savoir dans quelle mesure la police peut, en France, se délivrer du poids trop lourd de sa propre histoire. At regular intervals, the French national police force is facing serious accusations of racism. Here, we want to submit the hypothesis of “coloniality”, formulated by the historian Emmanuel Blanchard, to the knowledge acquired through the contemporary history of the police and from the mutations of French society, on the one hand, and to observations gathered in the field, on the other. The central question raised by this approach and which the article is trying to answer is whether the French police can get rid of the too heavy burden of its own history.
