Résumé anglais “All the Americans want to show us the most beautiful roads and the most ancient settlements. We want to see the wilderness and the savages but are afraid to admit it” Tocqueville said before exploring the Territory of Michigan in the summer of 1831, where he hoped to find in the “desert” an authentic Indian America that would soon disappear in the irresistible wake of democracy. Yet, this quest for the “real Indian” could only be unsuccessful. This failure seems to stem from Tocqueville's romantic and colonial position in America.
