Résumé anglais This paper analyses the early history of Kentucky as well as the language of the first systematically written history of the state (1812) in the context of nation-building. At the outcome of the Revolutionary War, the Transappalachian West did not belong securely to the United States. Its integration was threatened by separatist sentiment and conspiracies. In dealing with these problems, the Federalist historian Humphrey Marshall participated in constructing early U.S. nationalism.
