Nous interrogeons les modalités, les temporalités et les enjeux des cohabitations entre anciens et nouveaux habitants dans deux quartiers en voie de gentrification : le Reuterkiez à Berlin et la Magione à Palerme. Les différents modes d'habiter et de cohabiter sont ainsi questionnés par le prisme du travail, en postulant que c'est le travail – ou son absence – qui influence en partie les usages, les pratiques et les perceptions du quartier. Nous montrons d'abord comment il oriente les (in)visibilités locales et les perceptions des différentes catégories d'habitants. Nous analysons ensuite les manières dont il participe à façonner ou à consolider les identités, les catégorisations et les jugements moraux. Nous concluons sur l'intérêt de cet angle d'analyse qui permet d'éclairer la complexité des dynamiques d'appropriation, de ségrégation et de domination inhérentes au processus de gentrification. This article examines the modalities, the temporalities and the issues of coexistence between old and new inhabitants in the Reuterkiez in Berlin and the Magione in Palermo, two neighborhoods undergoing rapid gentrification. The different ways of living and living together are explored through the prism of work, with the postulate that it is work—or its absence—that partly influences the routines, practices and perceptions of the neighbourhood. We first show how it moulds local (in)visibilities and perceptions of different categories of inhabitants. We then analyse the ways in which contributes heavily to the shaping or consolidation of identities, categorisations and moral judgments within the two neighbourhoods. We conclude by arguing for the value of this angle of analysis in shedding light on the complexity of the dynamics of appropriation, segregation and domination inherent in the process of gentrification.
