La Fédération des centres sociaux et socioculturels de France promeut depuis plusieurs années la lutte contre la discrimination liée aux origines. La disqualification symbolique de ces enjeux dans l'espace public, l'évitement du politique au sein des centres sociaux ainsi que la faiblesse des ressources politiques des publics visés contribuent cependant à entraver de telles initiatives. S'appuyant sur un dispositif méthodologique hybride mixant une posture d'accompagnement par la recherche et une enquête de terrain rétrospective, l'analyse des actions mises en place par deux centres sociaux permet d'identifier certaines conditions permettant à de telles mobilisations improbables de « prendre » et de perdurer en contribuant à la politisation de publics éloignés du politique et sans expérience préalable. On montre d'abord que la genèse de ces actions collectives renvoie à l'investissement de professionnelles au profil atypique, ainsi qu'à des contextes institutionnels locaux propices à l'engagement dans la lutte contre les discriminations. On montre ensuite comment la forme de l'« enquête sociale » et la participation de chercheur·es jouant le rôle de soutiens à la cause ont permis la constitution d'un public et favorisé sa politisation chemin faisant. The Federation of Social and Sociocultural Centers of France has been promoting the fight against racial discrimination for several years. The symbolic disqualification of these issues in the public space, the avoidance of politics within social centers as well as the lack of political resources of the audiences, however, contribute to hindering such initiatives. Based on a methodological device mixing a posture of participative research and a retrospective field survey, the analysis of the actions implemented by two social centers makes it possible to identify certain conditions allowing such improbable mobilizations to emerge and to last over time by contributing to the politicization of audiences far removed from politics. We first show that the genesis of these collective actions refers to the investment of professionals with an atypical profile, to local institutional contexts conducive to commitment in the fight against discrimination as well as to the participation of researchers supporting the cause. We then show how the form of the “social inquiry” made it possible to co-construct with the participants frameworks of injustice that resonated with their experiences and, by allowing the constitution of an audience, favored its politicization along the way.
