Peut-on croire en un progrès par la raison après Auschwitz, Hiroshima et les goulags ? Pour combattre les anti-Lumières qui souhaitent rétablir une société hiérarchique tout en répondant aux accusations des postmodernes qui suspectent tout universalisme d'être hégémonique, Corine Pelluchon propose de nouvelles Lumières qui tiennent compte de notre dépendance à l'égard des autres vivants. How can we defend the Enlightenment today? Does its ideal of emancipation still holds meaning? In a context marked by the awakening of nationalism, environmental and health crises and rising inequality, we cannot be content to invoke an immutable spirit of the Enlightenment. To confront the danger of our civilisation's collapse without abandoning philosophical/scientific rationality, while bearing in mind our dependence on nature and on other living creatures: that is the approach of the book I wish to present. To fight the “Counter-Enlightenment”—those who would prefer to establish a hierarchical or theocratic society—and respond to post-modern accusations that all universalism has hegemonic aims, we must propose a new Enlightenment. One which requires us to visit anew the history of the Enlightenment, and to resist the amputation of reason, now reduced to an instrument for calculation and exploitation. The objective of the Enlightenment in the age of the living, and of its project for an ecological and democratic society, is to eliminate the schema of domination—over others and nature both interior and exterior to the self—which expresses a contempt for the body and for vulnerability.
