Partant d'un regard transversal sur différents terrains ethnographiques menés au cours de ma trajectoire de recherche, l'article propose une réflexion théorique et épistémologique sur la manière de penser et de construire l'objet frontières dans l'étude des migrations internationales. Il rend compte de la manière dont l'attention portée aux temporalités et spatialités des frontières m'a conduite, pour saisir les effets de la frontière et la frontière comme effet, à développer l'idée de continuum et d'articulation, dans le cours des expériences migratoires, entre frontières externes (ici entendues comme frontières territoriales) et frontières internes (entendues comme frontières des catégories institutionnelles). Cette grille de lecture cherche à répondre à un double défi : rendre compte de la frontière comme processus et expérience multiformes, sans pour autant la « noyer » dans l'analyse, en en faisant un signifiant et un signifié partout et donc, par effet domino, nulle part. Taking as a starting point a comparative juxtaposition of border situations observed in different field sites during my ethnographic research, this article offers a theoretical and epistemological reflection on how the border is conceptualized and constructed as an object in the study of international migration. The aim is to provide an account of the way in which, during my work focused on capturing the effects of the border and the border as an effect, the attention paid to the temporalities and spatialities of borders has led me to develop the idea of a continuum requiring an articulation between external borders (here understood as territorial borders) and internal borders (here understood as borders of institutional categories) over the course of migration experiences. This perspective aims to respond to a dual challenge: addressing the border as a multifaceted process and experience, without resorting to “drowning” it in analysis and ending up with an object that is simultaneously a signifier and signified everywhere and therefore nowhere.
