Comment aborder avec précision la guerre civile malgré le caractère « insaisissable » ou « incertain » de sa définition ? Comment prendre en compte d'un même mouvement sa réalité tangible dans l'histoire et la difficulté d'un usage de l'expression souvent instrumentalisé ? Faut-il privilégier une approche plutôt conceptuelle, visant à une forme d'idéal-type au risque d'une trop grande généralisation, ou doit-on souligner plutôt la variété des situations par une approche empirique et contingente, plus sûre mais plus limitée ? How can we approach the notion of civil war with precision, despite the “elusive” or “uncertain” nature of its definition? How can we consider, at the same time, its tangible reality in history and the difficulty of using the term, which is often instrumentalized? Should we favour a more conceptual approach, aiming for a kind of ideal-type at the risk of over-generalizing, or should we emphasize the variety of situations through an empirical and contingent approach, which is more reliable but more limited?
