Résumé anglais |
This essay uses as a starting point Henry F. May's watershed theory of American history in The End of American Innocence and tries to provide new insights by pointing out the permanence of a crusading spirit in the American press. The major psychological components of this crusading spirit are successively examined in XlXth century reformism, muckraking and contemporary « investigative reporting ». Although each of these major waves of crusading have brought into play specific journalistic strategies, they only point to minor changes in what appears to be a basic American approach to civics.
