Ezra Pound ne cherchait pas tant à traduire « bien » qu'à parvenir, par la traduction, à un texte encore plus beau que l'original. C'est vers 1917-18 que Pound se persuade du bien-fondé de cette conception, qui va jouer un rôle libérateur par rapport aux Cantos, quand Pound les recommencera en 1923. Il y met en œuvre quatre formes de « libération » envers l'original, dont deux formes principales : 1'« évanouissement » (s'éloigner de plus eh plus d'un original jusqu'au nième degré) et 1'« endettement » (juxtaposition de bribes très courtes de citations). On trouvera également l'original rapporté et l'original déformé. Pound mit ainsi au point un double système jouant à la fois sur sa propre absence de son texte et sur le mode injonctif, aboutissant à une pratique proprement poundienne du mot d'ordre dans les Cantos. Cantos, Translation — Misadventures of the Original.
Ezra Pound did not try to translate « well », but to create through translation a « new beauty » that would be something more than the original. Pound became quite sure of this idea toward 1917-18 ; it helped him to free himself when he started re-writing the Cantos in 1923. There Pound enacts four forms of « liberation » from the original, two of which are fundamental : « fading » {moving further and further away from original), and « crumbling » {juxtaposition of shorter and shorter bits of quotations). Also to be found are related original and defaced original. Thus Pound developed a double system based both on his absence from his own text and on injunction, which led to a typically poundian practice of watchwords in the Cantos.
