Plusieurs de ces nouvelles récentes, tout particulièrement deux nouvelles de Jane Anne Phillips, deux de Fred Chappell et le recueil complet de Barry Hannah enrichissent ce qui doit être reconnu comme la tradition la plus vivante et la plus originale de la nouvelle moderne. Of the many new first collections of Southern short stories published during the last few years, six stand out : Fred Chappell's Moments of Light, The New South Company, 1980, Barry Hannah's Airships, Alfred A. Knopf, 1978, Jane Anne Phillip's Black Tickets, Delacorte Press, 1979, Joe Ashby Porter's The Kentucky Stories, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1983, and Bobbie Ann Mason's Shiloh and other Stories, Harper & Row, 1982. Several of these new stories, especially two by Jane Anne Phillips and two by Fred Chappell, and the whole collection by Barry Hannah, enrich what now must be recognized as the most living and most original tradition of the short story in modern times.
